The Karradeio project is a competition entry for the restoration and expansion of a listed historic building on Chios Island, developed in 2025 in collaboration between Trichonas Architecture and IDAA. The proposal introduces a new volume alongside the existing neoclassical structure a full-height screen facade of vertical metal louvers that filters light, reflects the courtyard below, and makes the new addition legible as contemporary without competing with what was already there.

The courtyard between old and new becomes the project’s central space. A reflecting pool runs along the base of the new volume, with seating arranged around it under the shade of existing trees. The neoclassical building holds its position on one side; the new screen facade holds the other. The space between them is where the project actually happens — neither restoration nor extension, but a conversation between two architectural registers that agree to coexist on their own terms.
The main auditorium inside the new volume uses timber throughout — ceiling, seating, wall panels — against exposed concrete on the stage wall and perforated screens along the lateral facades that bring diffused light in from the courtyard. The result is a room that is acoustically considered and visually warm, a deliberate counterpoint to the precision of the exterior screen. IDAA contributed to both concept development and the full visualization scope for this competition, from site-level aerials to interior renders at construction detail.
