Kalloni Sports Hall.

Public Sports Facility, Lesvos

Composition.

The Kalloni Indoor Gymnasium is a public sports facility designed by Trichonas Architecture for the Municipality of West Lesvos, situated adjacent to the Kostas Kenteris football stadium. The building is a two-storey metal structure organized on a 5.60m grid, with a column-free interior span of 40 meters and a clear height of 9 meters above the sports floor. That structural decision — no columns interrupting the playing area — defines everything about how the building works.

Programme.

The facility accommodates basketball, volleyball, and handball on the main floor, with a seated spectator capacity of 600. The stands are designed to collapse partially, converting the hall into two parallel training courts when the full competition layout is not needed. Athletes enter from a dedicated north entrance, moving directly to changing rooms before reaching the sports floor. Spectators arrive from the west through an urban square, passing through a ticketed foyer before reaching the stands. The two circulation paths never cross.

Context.

The building sits within a broader urban intervention: parking, a bus stop, open tennis courts, planted areas, and an urban square that connects the sports hall to the street. The energy strategy targets a high energy class through a combination of passive design systems and active mechanical support, keeping the operational footprint in line with the civic ambition of the project. IDAA developed the architectural visualization for this project in 2023, translating a technically detailed brief into renders that communicate the building’s scale and its relationship to the surrounding public space.
